Amravati's Cotton Trade and Cinema Culture in 1952

In 1952, Amravati had twelve talkies (movie cinemas), and the main squares of the city were named after these talkies. They had been established primarily to provide entertainment for the thousands of traders, dealers, and transporters who came daily to the cotton markets, when around 30,000 traders visited the city every day, while the resident population was about 70,000. Because of this huge influx, the talkies played an important social and cultural role. On the global economic front, Amravati’s cotton in 1952 was considered marginally lower in quality compared to New York cotton, a fact reported in newspapers worldwide.
