Ashti Jaggery Market

A small amount of sugarcane produced in Bhandara district is sold in the village of Ashti in Bhandara district to make jaggery. This jaggery kiln uses traditional methods to make jaggery there and sell it in Tumsar market which is further exported all over India primarily Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. Locals say that the jaggery produced here is completely organic without using any chemicals.

Ashti, a remote village in the Tumsar taluka of Bhandara district, Maharashtra, has gained national recognition for its traditional jaggery (गूळ) production. With a population of around 12,000, this village has turned into a major center for organic jaggery manufacturing. Over 70 small-scale jaggery units, known locally as “गहाणे,” operate during the peak season from December to February.

These units rely on sugarcane grown in the surrounding region and follow traditional methods that avoid chemical use entirely. This ensures the jaggery is natural, pure, and chemical-free, which significantly enhances its market demand. Each unit typically employs 20 to 25 local workers, including both men and women, making it a vital source of seasonal employment and income.

Kardha Livestock market

In the village of Kardha, a distinctive livestock market takes place every Sunday morning, where cattle and buffaloes are bought and sold. This longstanding village tradition draws numerous participants. Similar weekly livestock markets are also held in Lakhandur, Tumsar, and Lakhani.

A large number of hotel businesses come here specially for prawns. The seafood market here runs in full fledged because of the presence of Guse Khurd dam. The variety of fish and prawns can be found here. According to locals, Paoni is the main place in the whole vidarbha region from where seafood products get exported.

Tumsar Rice Markets

Tumsar taluka hosts one of Asia's largest rice markets, playing a key role in Bhandara district's extensive rice production. The taluka is home to around 26 rice mills across 14 villages, contributing significantly to the region's rice processing industry. Bhandara district, known for its fertile lands and ideal climate, cultivates rice on a large scale, with varieties like Chinnor, Dubhraj, and Kalikammod in high demand. Efforts are underway to secure a GI tag for Bhandara Chinnor rice, aiming to enhance its market value and recognition.
