Main Industries
Mineral Processing
Mining and mineral processing industries in Gadchiroli district are centered around the iron ore deposits in Surjagarh, one of Maharashtra’s largest reserves.
Besides iron ore, the region also has limestone, dolomite, and quartz, essential for various industries. The Maharashtra government is promoting Gadchiroli as a potential steel hub, encouraging investments and collaborating with companies like Thriveni Earthmovers Pvt. Ltd. to boost mining activities.
Forest-based Industry
Among the most significant resources, locals say, are bamboo and Tendu leaves, both of which are harvested sustainably and used in various crafts and products. The bamboo industry is particularly noteworthy, with numerous small-scale enterprises focused on manufacturing bamboo mats, ply, and traditional articles.
Agro-based Industry
Gadchiroli district is primarily an agricultural region, with paddy being the most significant crop cultivated extensively during the Kharif season. In addition to paddy, farmers grow various other crops, including jowar, linseed, tur, and wheat, which contribute to both local food security and the economy. To enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability, initiatives like the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) have been implemented, particularly benefiting small and marginal farmers.
Furthermore, there is a growing interest in sericulture within the district, supported by the Tussar Silk Worm Centre located in Armori taluka, which promotes silk production as an additional agro-based industry.
Paper Mills
The district hosts a paper mill situated at Ashti in Chamorshi Taluka and a paper pulp factory at Desaiganj. These facilities are crucial as they represent the only large-scale industries in the region, contributing to local employment and economic activity.
Prominent Local/Cottage Industries
Gadchiroli district's economy is primarily agricultural, with rice serving as the main crop. This has led to the establishment of numerous rice mills that process the locally harvested paddy. Additionally, the Tussar Silk Worm Centre located in Armori Taluka plays a crucial role in fostering sericulture, thereby providing both employment opportunities and income for local farmers.
Bamboo products also contribute significantly to the local economy. The Bamboo Articles Cluster supports various micro-enterprises engaged in the production of diverse bamboo items, further enhancing economic activity in the region.
