Nagpur district has a well-structured network of police stations strategically positioned across major urban and rural areas, ensuring effective law enforcement and public safety. Key police stations are located in major localities, including Sitabuldi, Sadar, Ganeshpeth, and Dhantoli, covering both commercial hubs and densely populated residential areas.

Unlike other parts of Maharashtra, where terms like “Mama” or “Dada” are commonly used, locals in Nagpur typically refer to police personnel as “Police Kaka.”

Jail system

Nagpur Central Jail, established in 1864, has played a significant role in India's history, having housed several notable prisoners. One of the most infamous inmates was Yakub Memon, convicted for his involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings. He was executed at the jail on July 30, 2015, marking the first execution at the facility in 31 years. Another well-known prisoner was Arun Gawli, a notorious Mumbai gangster who was transferred to Nagpur Central Jail. G.N. Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor, was incarcerated here for alleged links with Naxalites, while activist Arun Ferreira documented his experiences during his imprisonment at the jail in his prison diary.

Beyond its role in housing modern criminals, the jail has historical significance dating back to the freedom struggle. One of its most notable events was the execution of Shankar Mahale, an 18-year-old freedom fighter who was hanged on January 19, 1943, for his participation in the Quit India Movement. His execution made him one of the youngest martyrs of India's independence struggle.

Community Perception of Safety

In Nagpur, women and children are generally considered safe, even at night. Teenagers often commute independently using bicycles, Uber autos, and cabs, though parents stay cautious about younger kids going out alone. Police say child kidnappings are rare, typically one every five years. A recent example: on May 4, 2025, Beltarodi police rescued a five-year-old girl abducted for ransom near Wardha Road within just one hour, arresting the accused in Butibori.

Despite the city's overall safety, residents remain vigilant in certain neighborhoods due to a rise in gang violence, which has prompted increased police patrols and community awareness.
