Nashik district has a well-structured network of police stations strategically positioned across urban, rural, and industrial areas, ensuring effective law enforcement and public safety. Major towns and talukas, including Nashik City, Malegaon, Niphad, Sinnar, and Igatpuri, have dedicated police stations to handle local security needs.
Jail System
Established in 1927, Nashik Road Central Prison holds historical significance, particularly from the time of India's independence movement. Freedom fighter Pandurang Sadashiv Sane, widely known as Sane Guruji, was imprisoned here in 1933. During his incarceration, he wrote the renowned novel Shyamchi Aai and the reflective poem Khara to Ekachi Dharma. The prison also housed revolutionary leader Senapati Bapat. To commemorate their legacy, monuments have been erected within the prison premises.
Community Perception of Safety
In Nashik city, women can generally move around safely even at night. However, in rural areas, safety concerns persist despite police surveillance, and families remain cautious about allowing women and girls to be out after dark.
According to a couple of locals, while the city has adequate law enforcement, people in villages still feel uneasy about women traveling alone at night. “In the city, we see women working late hours and commuting without fear, but in villages, it’s different. Families are still hesitant,” said a resident from Malegaon.
A rare but alarming incident was reported in Ajang Wadel village of Malegaon tehsil, where a 6 to 7-year-old girl was murdered by a neighbor in an act of revenge following a past dispute. Such crimes are uncommon and are met with strong public outrage. This particular case saw swift investigation and legal action, reflecting the community’s intolerance toward crimes against children.
