The Thane Police, under the Maharashtra Police, maintain law and order across the district through multiple commissionerates: Thane City, Navi Mumbai, Mira Bhayandar, and Thane Rural Police. Thane City Police, led by Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbare, is divided into five zones, each headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and assisted by Assistant Commissioners (ACPs). Zone I and Zone V cover Thane City (e.g., Naupada, Kapurbawadi, Rabodi), Zone II includes Bhiwandi (e.g., Bhiwandi City, Narpoli), Zone III covers Kalyan-Dombivli (e.g., Dombivli, Vishnu Nagar), and Zone IV includes Ulhasnagar and Badlapur (e.g., Badlapur West). These zones manage thirty-five police stations, per the Thane Police website. Thane Rural Police, led by Superintendent Vikram Deshmane, oversees stations like Bhiwandi Taluka and Ganeshpuri.
Community Perception of Safety
According to locals, Thane residents generally feel secure due to active police patrols and community initiatives like mohalla committees in areas like Thane City and Kalyan. Recent successes, such as arrests within four hours of an FIR and incineration of one thousand five hundred ninety-two point seven kg of narcotics, enhance public trust. However, incidents like the 2024 Badlapur encounter, where an accused in a sexual assault case died in custody, sparked controversy. Allegations of police misconduct, including extortion of forty thousand rupees by three cops, raise accountability concerns. Urban challenges like cybercrime and traffic disruptions (e.g., on Ghodbunder Road) persist, but police efforts, including CCTV surveillance and cyber units, mitigate risks.
