Commonly Reared Livestock

In the Washim district, goats, buffaloes, cows, and poultry are among the most commonly reared livestock, reflecting agricultural practices that integrate both meat and dairy production.

According to locals, goats are raised for multiple purposes, including meat production and manure. Goat milk is considered highly nutritious, while the meat, known as bokad or bakra, remains in high demand. Additionally, goat manure is valued as a natural fertilizer that enriches the soil for crop cultivation. Many farmers believe that goat farming is a profitable venture due to its low investment costs and the variety of products that goats provide. Farmers typically allow their goats to graze on open lands, sometimes supplementing their diet with additional feed to enhance their health and productivity.

The Mehsana breed of buffalo is commonly found in the district, and locals note that it is preferred for its high milk yield, typically producing between 1,200 and 1,500 kilograms per lactation. This breed is a result of crossbreeding between Surti and Murrah buffaloes and is distinguished by its longer body, lighter limbs, and less curved horns compared to Murrah buffaloes. According to dairy farmers, the introduction of private dairy enterprises around the district headquarters has contributed to an increase in buffalo rearing, as demand for buffalo milk has risen.

Locals observe that the population of indigenous cows in the Washim district has been declining steadily. This reduction is attributed to the decreasing availability of grazing land, as uncultivated areas are being converted into farmland for food production. Restrictions on free grazing in forested areas, the low milk yield of local cow breeds, and farmers’ preference for draught animals rather than dairy cattle have also contributed to the decline. Additionally, the shift toward cash crop cultivation has reduced the availability of traditional fodder crops like jowar.

Local poultry, particularly indigenous hens, are known for their resilience and ability to thrive on minimal care. According to residents, these hens adapt well to foraging on local feed resources and produce high-quality eggs, which are either consumed within households or sold in local markets. Local eggs are widely regarded as nutritious, and many doctors recommend them to patients.

The meat of Washim local cocks is considered flavorful, though these birds are smaller than commercial broilers. It is a common tradition for fathers-in-law to invite their sons-in-law for a meal featuring this regional poultry delicacy. Many locals say that raising Washim hens provides rural households with a steady source of food and income, as they require low investment while yielding eggs and occasional meat sales. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in poultry rearing, with some attributing it to changing agricultural priorities and economic factors.

Veterinary Care

The district headquarters has several government veterinary hospitals located near the district hospital or in the main town area. These facilities provide a variety of services, including emergency care, routine check-ups, vaccinations, and surgeries.

  • Rokade Pet Clinic
  • Veterinary Hospital, Mannasingh Chowk
  • Veterinary Hospital, Parwa
  • Shelu Bazar Veterinary Hospital

In addition to government facilities, there are private veterinary practitioners primarily found in larger towns and villages. These clinics often provide more personalized services and may be sought for specialized treatments and consultations.
